Your Kids are Becoming More Independent, But are You?

school1.jpg

Eventually it happens - your sweet baby grows up into an independent five year old.

It's the first day of Kindergarten, and your sweet baby ditches you for a playhouse and the sand table. With barely a hug & a kiss, your child has a life outside of yours.

...how do you get over it? Well, some moms welcome it, which is great. Others feel a bit sad seeing their little buddy off to school. What's a mom, or dad, to do? Here's a list to get you through the next few weeks:

1. Exercise - If your babe is five years old, you can't use that 'baby weight' excuse any more!

2. Organize - Without your five year old around asking for snacks and calling you to 'come look at this', you'll have time to be more productive than you've been in years!

3. Cook - It's amazing how many meals you can cook & freeze without little hands 'helping' you out. (Think lasagna, casseroles and spanokopita)

4. Explore YOU - Hey you've given yourself to your child for five years - have your interests or hobbies fallen to the wayside? Get back into what you enjoy doing - or start doing something you've been putting off...

5. Shed a few tears - there's no going back, and like Trace Adkins says, 'your gonna miss this, you're gonna want this back' referring to the time with your child. It's true, this time doesn't come back, enjoy your child every day.

6. Enjoy a margarita with some girlfriends...Heck, why not?

Just remember, your job as a parent is to prepare your little one to become independent in life...and Kindergarten is a big step in reaching that goal.

It's all good. Hang in there.

Figuring it out as I go,

- Lesli
