Would He Call 911?

911-who-icon.jpg

There are so many news coming out about kids doing heroic things by calling 911 when a parent is in trouble. I'm sure you've seen them on News a lot. 4 to 6 to 8 to 10 yr olds knowing what to do and who to call when their Mom or Dad suddenly drops on the floor or whatever. Everytime a news like that comes on, my husband and I remind our 9yr old son to remember the numbers 911. We've taught him about it years ago but we're always reminding him just in case. If not 911, knock on neighbors' doors. But then again, my husband and I aren't that oblivious to notice that our son's priorities are sometimes wonky. For lack of a better word. I joke around sometimes that if it was either of us in distress, we're screwed. My son is a great kid but he's got his quirky moments. Kinda like the other day at school. He came home with a ticket with red ink all over the page because he wasted 30 minutes doing nothing when he was supposed to be writing a plan from the story his Teacher read in the class. His excuse? "There were kids in the playground and their noise distracted me".

See, right now, his 4th grade class is in a trailer, outside the school building itself. But this is only temporary while the school is building another one to separate Highschool from Gradeschool. So yes, his class' trailer is outside, right next to the school playground, infortunately. His excuse is understandable but then again, his classmates were able to tune out the kids outside. His excuse is probably something all of us would've told when we couldn't produce our work.. LOL. He's funny, but not that funny :) .

With that example and knowing all his tendencies to not focus on the task at hand, would he call 911 if ever either his Father and I are in trouble? I know it's a big responsibility to put upon his shoulders but it would be nice if he'd actually remember what we've taught him in case of emergency through the years. Would he pick up the phone and dial 911 or would he assume we're sleeping, therefore go back to his room to immerse himself in artwork or one of his books, or worse, his gameboy?

Let's pray we never find out.. LOL.

*PS : I think it's time for another refresher course as soon as he gets home from school. After he's done with his homework of course :) .
