When You Get to the End of Your Rope - Hang On! (Best of 2007)

That's my motto. Every woman needs a motto, something to hang on to when your child tells you at 9 pm that she has a science project due the next morning, the stomach flu is making the rounds in your house, you're out of milk AND food in general, and your internet provider is down. Not to mention the heaping basket of clean laundry that has been waiting to be folded for 3 days. Or the fact that you haven't vacuumed or swept in about a week...A motto won't save the day, but it might make you laugh when you feel like you need a good cry...

Sometimes I think the biggest, most annoying stress is the pressure to keep my house clean. Hey, my house looks lived in and that means there's life going on in it. That's not to say I don't run around like a chicken with her head cut off trying to tidy the house if I'm having company over. It's some sort of pride thing. I wish I could just say Hey, love me, love my house...and the casual clutter that comes with it. I'm working on it. In the meantime, I'll share some of my tricks with you...

How to clean your house in 15 minutes (or less!):

- Grab a sock out of the dirty laundry (sitting nearby) and quickly dust any visible surface.
- Use one of those bathroom wipes to give the bathroom a once over.
- Stack whatever you can fit into the dishwasher and oven.
- Wipe the counters
- Sweep
- Throw the stacks of clutter, books & magazine into a laundry basket to be sorted through later
- Feel free to stuff things under the couch or in the piano bench

Believe me, I use the above system all the time, and it gets the job done. Cleaning house is just not my strength. I have more important strengths like playing monopoly with my kids, taking my dog for a walk or reading the paper. I'd rather be baking with my kids or out in the yard. I figure - will it really matter in one month or one year if I didn't keep a clean house?

Figuring it out as I go,

- Lesli
