"Watch children around water at all times," says expert

The statistics are so disturbing. Every year, an average of 400 Canadians drown. More than half of those drownings occur during the summer months of June, July and August.

In fact, a Canadian Red Cross research report that examined 10 years of drowning statistics showed that young children aged 1 to 4 and men aged 15 to 44 are at the greatest risk for drowning. The report found that backyard pools are especially dangerous for small children.

"A child can drown in an inch of water," says Michele Mercier, National Manager of Injury Prevention, Canadian Red Cross. "Watch children around the water at all times, whether a pool, the bathtub, or at the beach."

The Canadian Red Cross suggests these tips on how to avoid water-related injuries:

-Fence all pools with four-sided fencing. Ensure home pools are fenced (not just around the property) and the gate access is fitted with a self-closing and self-latching mechanism.

-Empty inflatable pools after each use.

-Flotation toys don't replace supervision. Always watch children in water environments.

-Water and alcohol don't mix. Don't drink while swimming or boating.

-When boating, ensure everyone in the boat is wearing a lifejacket.
