Tips On Disinfecting Your Kitchen Sponges

sponges.jpgMy husband asked me the other day if I read about how to kill bacteria off of kitchen sponges from the October issue of Men's Health magazine. I have not so he shared with me what he learned from the magazine. Microwave. Apparently, that little food-warming/thawing machine can kill off the bacterias looming around your sponges. Because I'm such a , errrr, how do I delicately say this, a smart ass, I said :

"Hmmmm, how about just throwing them away and just buy new ones? You can get a 6-pack for $1 at any Dollar store. Besides, I have a problem laying down bacteria-laden sponges on top of my microwave glass dish"
.

My husband further tried to defend the "tip" he just learned by saying, not all people wanna buy new pack of sponges every week or so. I guess. I finally read the article today and my husband neglected to tell me that it also stated that some people have found that dry sponges catch fire when zapped inside the microwave. But Joseph Laquara, Ph.D, a professor of family policy at Cornell University suggested a fix for this fire zapping monsters.

Boil them or throw then in the dishwasher once a week
.

I'm thinking these tips could probably help us maintain a Green living but would using water to boil the sponges consume water, and more gas? While the microwave process will just waste electric energy?

Therefore I'm going back to my reliable solution. Throw the damn yellow with green scrubs thingies after 1 week or so and when my bag of supplies need replenishing I'll just visit my nearest Dollar store to get a 6-pack for $1.

Simple. Sometimes people make things so complicated. So which tip are you in favor for? Mine or Men's Health magazine? :)

hehe.. I do microwave mine. I like the ones with the mesh and the sponge inside. It makes it easy to clean the microwave too with the sponge 'coz it's moist.
