The Tomato: My Superhero

Every time I go grocery shopping (which is quite often), I have an impulse to buy tomatoes. Even if I already have a refrigerator packed with them at home. I can't resist. (Yes, I know, they're better sitting out on the counter than hanging out in the crisper.) They're my trigger shopping food. I just need tomatoes. All the time. And I eat them. All the time.

So whenever I hear of the nutritional superpowers that my fruit-often-called-a-veggie has, I beam with pride. Because I knew there was a reason for my addiction.

Five exciting things about tomatoes:


  1. They help reduce blood pressure.

  2. Cooking tomatoes increases their lycopene content. So salsa, tomato sauce, and even organic ketchup are antioxidant superstars.

  3. Tomato consumption has been shown to decrease the risk of pancreatic and breast cancers.

  4. They can help boost your skin's ability to protect itself from the sun. Yes, it's like internal sunscreen (but still apply the external stuff generously).

  5. They can reduce cholesterol.

Swap out an unhealthy habit for a tomato addiction. The culinary options are endless, the flavors are incredible, and your body will thank you for it.
