The Importance of Tummy Time

For my daughter's 1-month old check-up, her Pediatrician made it a point that she spends time on her tummy at least 10 minutes, 3 times a day or more. Tummy Time as it is called helps babies develop physical skills and sense of competence. Also known as "floor time", this particular activity for infants is benificial to promote their motor skills.

"The experience of being on their tummy helps babies learn to push up, roll over, sit up, crawl, and pull to a stand," explains Danette Glassy, a pediatrician in Mercer Island, Washington, and chairperson of the American Academy of Pediatrics' committee on early education and childcare. From BabyCenter...

tummytime_mat.jpgWhen she started her tummy time play, I first used a fleeced blanket to support her chest on top of the hard carpet. A month later I found a tummy time mat that came with a mini-boppy pillow from a consignment sale for only $7. Then I saw this Lamaze Spin and Explore Garden Gym from Learning Curve from a magazine which I thought is just soooo cool and well, soo cute :). This would definitely entertain your little one while doing his/her tummy time exercise. If you can't afford this one just do what I first did by laying a soft blanket onto the carpet, and place some really cool toys that your baby can learn to reach. One best toy is anything that has a mirror in it. Babies love looking at ther reflection. :)
