I love coming across a new idea (or a twist on an old one!). One of my daughters has a serious nut allergy that requires her to carry an Epi-pen. It's been a part of her life, ever since she had her first allergic reaction at 2 1/2 years old.
You certainly lose alot of freedom when there is an allergy in the house. Things that are normally taken for granted have to be scrutinized. For example, an innocent birthday party might hold dangers and cross contaminations not obvious to those without the life threatening allergy. Generally, as a parent and certainly as a child, you adapt, and you use your common sense.
When I saw these allergy alerting t-shirts at Blue Bear Aware, they really hit home. They're fun, but they get the message across in a friendly, non-alarmist way.
This site offers fun t-shirts raising awareness about nut, seafood, and milk allergies. There's also t-shirts for those with Celiac Disease.
Figuring it out as I go,
- Lesli
