I understand the philosophy of taking care of yourself first so you can help others but it isn't the easiest mantra to follow. My experience over the past week is the incentive (read kick in the butt) I needed to take my health more seriously.
I ended up with a sinus infection on top of the bronchitis I was already suffereing from because I kept procrastinating - I didn't want to go back to the doctor when my antibiotics didn't do their job. The pressure in my head became so intense that I seriously thought my eyeball was going to pop and I would have been grateful for the release. Even then, my husband had to force me to the doctor's office. It wasn't a good scene.
I have been in bed for the past three days and finally feel somewhat human again. My three guys were great and took care of mommy (although we won't mention the housework and laundry waiting for me).
It wasn't a lesson I wanted to be reminded of, but us mommies have to take care of ourselves too. Don't forget the great lessons taught on all airplanes:
Put your oxygen mask on before assisting others. You’ve probably heard this on every commercial flight you’ve been on, but it’s worth repeating ... While you may feel an impulse to first help your children or the elderly passenger sitting next to you, you’ll be no good to anyone if you don’t remain conscious.
