Tadpoles on the Table

Filiford_l_vgroda.jpg There is a pond in my back yard, a natural habitat for all kinds of critters. There are no fish, the herons come and snap them up; but there are frogs, waterbugs and probably others I am best not knowing about.

For my son, the highlight of being outside is using his butterfuly net to catch frogs. And, joy of joys, this year they laid eggs - A LOT of eggs. The round jelly globs were everywhere, prompting a very serious talk about leaving them alone if he wants to continue having frog friends to play with. Did he listen? For a couple of weeks, and then it happened. Not one, not two, but three huge blobs of frog egg jelly were plopped on my kitchen table. (Please don't ask where I was when this was happening and call me a bad mom, I do supervise my son around the water but dang is he quick!!)

So this forced me to run around looking for our old fish tank to throw them in with some water. There were some casualities, but at last count we have 12 little tadpoles swimming around in my kitchen.

I decided to get over the gross factor and be the kind of mom who looks at this as a learning opportunity (because it is right!?). Even I am learning something, including what to feed a tadpole if you are not inclined to go and buy special food for them (lettuce).

Ah, the joy of boys!

Does anyone want a pet frog?

All I can say is make sure that tank has a top on it! I'll never forget the fun we had when my sister and I brought some frogs into the house and didn't contain them properly... Let's just say that my mother was less than thrilled! We managed to find all but the largest frog - which our dog found weeks later - after it had dried out under the couch!

Oh the things I have to look forward to when my little boy gets a little bigger...

Thanks for the tip Brianne! As soon as these guys start hopping they are going to be released into the wild (and sooner if my guy can't leave them alone).

Boys are definitely an adventure :)
