Swimsuit Anxiety Never Killed Any Body

The depth of my anxiety when I realize I don't have my own swimsuit at the pool is dependent on the length of time it takes me to find a swimsuit that suits, if not flatters, my, shall we say, experienced body. Which needless to say, it can take me weeks to find a swimsuit that I feel I can wear in a public place.

Recently, while driving out of town with the kids for a week, I realized I had forgotten to pack my swimsuit. Which wouldn't necessarily be a problem except that I had promised the wee ones that I would take them swimming every day. Which also wouldn't necessarily be problem, except that I still need to swim with my almost 7 year old.

Did I experience anxiety when it occurred to me that I had packed three suits each for the kids, towels, water toys, sunscreen and sun hats, but had forgotten to think of my own needs? (Like the need to cover my privates in a public pool?)

I was already 45 minutes from home and I was torn, should I turn the car around and fetch my swimsuit? Or should I throw caution to the wind and hope I would hit a garage sale in the small town we were going to for the weekend? (Read: No Wal-Mart) Maybe the secondhand store would have the perfect suit for me?

I threw caution to the wind and continued on our way. Sans suit.

The morning after our arrival, we zipped down to the secondhand store. Rummaging around the musty used clothes, the girls and I couldn't find any swimsuits and were about to leave empty-handed, when out of the corner of my eye, under a battered table, I saw the shine of lycra...swimsuits galore!

Would you believe I found not one, but TWO lovely, swimsuits that seemed to be brand new. Perhaps bought on a whim during a 30% off sale at a department store and then forgotten, only to be donated without even being worn.

Needless to say, the kids and I swam lots...and my swimsuit anxiety is now lower than it has been in years...

Figuring it out as I go,

- Lesli
