BARBECUES, SPARKLERS AND THINGS THAT GO BANG IN THE NIGHT

Okay, so I’ll admit it – I’m American, and proud of it. I was even born in Philadelphia, birthplace of my country, so I guess that kinda makes me a Yankee Doodle girl (and yes, snickering is acceptable).

Anyway, I’m telling you all this because I wanted to share some tips about summer safety – and I think they’re important now, heading into what we “south of your border” types consider the big blast of the season. But be it a July 4th celebration, time away on vacation, or just a picnic in the back yard, you’ll have a lot more fun if you keep these things in mind:

Heat stroke can kill before you know it. – Make sure you take plenty of breaks, wear appropriate levels of sun block, stay hydrated, use the buddy system, and think about what you’re doing. Get plenty of rest, all things in due time, tomorrow’s another day.

Kids are out of school. – The little darlings have been cooped up all year and now ready to let loose. They’re not thinking about you or whatever else is going on, but you should be in control, watch speeds when driving or boating, and be aware that a child may appear at any time. Make sure they’re properly geared, too – be it a helmet for biking, pads for rollerblading, or a life vest when boating.

Fireworks. – Yes, they make us “ooh” and “aah”, but fireworks can harm, maim, or kill. Take a few minutes and be familiar with the situation, make the appropriate corrections, and enjoy what there is to enjoy! Respect those who are authorized to use them, and if you aren’t, then don’t. A mis-shot fire cracker can turn your outdoor fun to tragedy.
