Okay, I admit it: I watch reality TV. A lot. So much that, in fact, I blog about it on this very channel (see SurvivorDaily, the AI blog and the culinary blog for my take on some of my favorites).
So of course this week was a biggie for me, as two of my guilty pleasures had their "grand finale." First, in the wonderful world of romance, DeAnna Pappas (otherwise known as "The Bachelorette") chose her life mate. (Yes, I realize that "winning" a groom on a game show is really bizarre, but who am I to say? I met my
own soul mate in an online trivia tournament. Which, of course, is a whole 'nuther story.) Now DeAnna, for those of you who don't know the back story, was herself a competitor in a recent season of "The Bachelor." In fact, she was the "chosen one," until her bachelor (a cad named Brad) decided to pull a Kelly Taylor and chose to stay single rather than get down on his knee before either of the women. Which, of course, is the honest, decent thing to do if you're not in love with someone. But the powers that be (and a lot of America) made Brad the villain in this drama and embraced DeAnna as the newest bachelorette.
And Ms. Pappas didn't disappoint. In fact, she totally surprised me by choosing snowboarder Jesse instead of single dad Jason, who certainly looked like the Ken to her Barbie.
Jason was picture perfect; Jesse wore pink shoelaces. Jason was responsible, hardworking, and reliable; Jesse wasn't sure how he would earn a living when his days on the slope were over. Jason even had an adorable little boy (who even looked like he could be DeAnna's), which would really help, since DeAnna, who is already 26, had said she wanted three children before she's 30. Yes, on paper, Jason made all the sense in the world - but DeAnna chose Jesse.
Color me surprised, but happy. After all, my husband - who is not only a decade younger than I am, but also a good two inches shorter - wouldn't add up on paper either.
Now, believe me, I don't have a lot of hope for this union. After all, not many of the relationships spawned on "The Bachelor" or "The Bachelorette" have lasted (the lone exception is the pink confection known as Trista and Ryan). But I applaud a young bachelorette who saw appearances and recognized that what adds up on paper isn't always best for the heart. DeAnna and Jesse, I'm not sure if you'll last beyond this first round of guest appearances, or if you'll make it to your wedding date (now set for May 9, 2009). But I hope you enjoy it, and each other.
Later....my thoughts on "She's Got the Look." Stay tuned!
