SimplyMom: Pass the Lipstick

Oblige me a minute, will ya? I know we're not supposed to talk about God, politics and sex, but let's face it - we ladies can only take so much of talking about potty training and making healthy food choices. So grab a cup of coffee - okay, a soy bar - and let's dish.

So, after the dust has settled, what do y'all think of Sarah Palin, the woman who may - if the Republicans prevail - be just a heartbeat away from the American presidency? To be honest, y'all, girlfriend scares me. She seems to have a bit of an entitlement complex, and doesn't seem to be all that up on the issues that concern us regular folk. Sure, she can see Russia from her deck, but how does that help her know what's going on in foreign affairs? I can see my neighbor's house from my front step, and I don't have a clue what happens over there.

And then there's the whole kid thing. Hey, I admire Ms. Palin for choosing to keep and raise her baby with Down Syndrome. I've been an older mom myself, over forty when the youngest was born, and I can only imagine what it would be like to get that news after taking an amnio. I think she made the right choice, the brave choice, and I hope in my heart I would do the same.

Her other kids are no angels, but whose are? I know for sure that I could never be vice president (or even run for dogcatcher) because the transgressions of my children would be put under the microscope. And they're scary enough when you see them through my eyes.

But what this all comes down to is time. Ms. Palin has a young daughter going through a (presumedly) unplanned pregnancy, and a special needs baby, not to mention the other kids. Those things are pretty time-intensive; those kids need a mom. Let's be honest - I have five kids, and with their demands it's a wonder I can even get my own job (in social work) done. And I have to wonder how she'll be able to juggle it all - and which plate will fall.

And I know the argument. No one ever questions a male candidate about these things. Fair enough. But in my mom's heart, I know mothering is a big job, and there are some things kids need a mom for. Just sayin'. I hope and pray that all our candidates have their priorities straight - for all our sakes.
