SimplyMom: In The News

Welcome to Motherhood, Ashleigh Wiseman!

Ashleigh is the 18 year old Scottish girl who went into labor eight weeks prematurely and had to take a five-hour ambulance ride to Glasgow, more than a hundred miles from home, to deliver her baby daughter.

Then, days later, it was decided that baby McKenna had to be airlifted to a hospital back at home in Aberdeen - but the hospital staff told Ashleigh there was no room for her on the helicopter. Instead, they gave her bus fare.

So tiny McKenna - just 3 pounds 10 ounces at birth - took to the air alone, while the young momma hopped a train and met up with the newborn as soon as she could.

Read all about it here. Or another take, here.

Now, I'm sure the hospital in question - Southern General Hospital in Glasgow - gives its patients excellent care. But their bedside manner - and manners - leave much to be desired. I remember hating when my newborns were taken to the nursery for one reason or another (after all, we were together 24/7 for over nine months!). I simply cannot imagine having my helpless child fly off without me.

And the bus fare? Nice touch.
