SimplyMom - At Your Service

When I was growing up, I was blessed with clear skin. I tried not to eat too many potato chips, stayed away from butter, and cleansed regularly with Sea Breeze. My skin rewarded me by never breaking out.

I didn't realize how lucky I had it. My boys still swear by Sea Breeze, but I didn't expect my skin to start acting up - so long after my teen years. Which leads to this question:

It’s called “teenage acne.” So why am I breaking out now?

“Contrary to popular belief, acne is not just a teenage condition,” says Andrea Lynn Cambio MD. “Although most common during adolescence, acne is quite prevalent in women in their 30s, 40s and even 50s.”

Your “male side” is to blame for the breakouts – even those that happen right before your period. “(Acne) is due to androgens, male hormones present in both sexes,” says Cambio.

So maybe you won’t outgrow it. Is there anything you can do? “Treatments include topical retinods, oral contraceptives, oral antibiotics and, in severe cases, isotretinoin (Accutane),” says Cambio. “A visit to the dermatologist for cortisone injections is a quick fix for an embarrassing breakout.”
