The second in my continuing series of answers to the questions you're too shy to ask!

Okay, last time around we talked about hair loss in women. But what about when there's too much hair? Here's the question:

Must I live with the sudden hair growth on my upper lip and chin?

Blame your parents for this one. “Facial hair in women is largely genetic,” says Baltimore-based MD Dana S. Simpler. However, it may also be caused by some unusual hormonal conditions, such as polycystic ovary syndrome, Simpler says. A medication called spironolactonem, which can be prescribed by a dermatologist, can help the situation if this is the cause.

And if it’s not? If your facial hair is inherited, it can be handled in a variety of ways. “Try waxing, tweezing, chemical depilatories, bleaching, shaving, or electrolosis, “ says Andrea Lynn Cambio, MD, a New York based dermatologist. She adds, “Laser removal is the newest technology, with some of the most long-term benefits.”
