Well, here it is the last week of June...A whole school year has passed! It's that time of year to give thanks to the teachers in your child's life - school teacher, dance teacher, sports coach - only if you think they've positively influenced your child's life, of course.
Having spent alot of time in schools this year (due to one of my part-time career pursuits) I have seen how difficult it is for our teachers today. An average elementary classroom has upwards of about 20 kids, over half may have issues that require specific attention. This could be in the form of not reading at the same level as the rest of the class, a processing problem, a medical issue, or even needing more of a challenge in class. The role of a teacher is not easy, especially when you factor in behaviours, both unacceptable and disrespectful. It is harder than ever for a teacher to address all of the needs of a child in her classroom these days. So, if you happen upon a teacher that 'clicks' with your child, consider yourself lucky. And for goodness sake, show your appreciation!
Most teachers will tell you that they have enough soap, coffee mugs and 'teacher' inscribed collectibles. Mix it up a bit and realize that teachers are just like you and me. They like Starbucks (gift card!); Chapters (gift card!); massages and tickets to the theatre or other events. If you've gotten to know your child's teacher you might even have gotten a glimpse into their lives and interests outside of their classrooms.
In the past I have given gift cards (or products) from a teaching store that carries fun teachers supplies, such as: stickers, stationary, workbooks, games, books, bulletin board signage. Apparently many teachers need to purchase their 'extra' classroom supplies (like the mentioned ones) out of their own pockets. (When in doubt give good quality dark chocolate...)
So, if you have a few good teachers in your life, be sure to recognize them.(Because you don't always come across a teacher that influences your child in a positive way. Rejoice when you do!) Whether you show your appreciation with a small gift or a heartfelt note of thanks, be sure to be sincere and be sure not take your child's teachers for granted.
Figuring it out as I go,
Lesli
