I spend lots of time in the Alberta foothills, one of Canada's hot spots for lightning. Last year, there were an incredible 1.2 million strikes here. The ferocity of these lightning storms can be really frightening.
Electricity supplier Fortis Alberta wants to reduce the number and length of power outages their customers experience due to lightning strikes.
Fortis Alberta recommends these excellent tips on keeping safe and preparing for lightning storms:
-Before a storm hits, disconnect sensitive electronic equipment - radios, televisions and microwaves.
-Stay indoors and keep away from anything that will conduct electricity such as radiators, stoves and metal pipes.
-Don't handle electrical equipment including your portable phone. Cell phones are safest.
-If you are outdoors, take shelter if you can count 30 seconds or less between lightning and thunder.
