Raising a Girl

emma_grndrs.jpgRaising kids is hard, period. But I've been discovering lately how my husband and I are going to have a harder job raising our little girl. It seems everytime we're out somewhere, casually walking down the meat aisle for example, all of a sudden I feel a thug in my cart and there's a lady oogling at my daughter, then looks at me and says, "SHE IS GORGEOUS". I smile and say 'Thank You'. I am grateful but sometimes amused by it all. My son got a lot of oogling when he was a baby too, but his sister is getting a lot more. And please, don't take this as I'm comparing my two kids's looks. They're both equally beautiful to me. I mean 'cmon, they have my DNA..hahaha. My point here is that, raising a girl is going to be tougher as I'm finding out lately. Why?

Let's face it, IT is a Man's World out there. Women have come a long way but there is always that friction of whether a woman is capable of doing "everything". I don't necessarily agree with the 'everything' part coz I don't fall in that category. I'm more of a "I'm trying my best" kind of woman/mother. While my mother-in-law was here for a visit, I told her that I don't want her grand daughter to grow up thinking she could have anything she wants because she's beautiful. I don't want her to think she could get away with everything she pleases without consequences. I want her to grow up to be a happy person, most importantly. Whatever she decides, either to be a SAHM like me or a Working-Mom, i'll be there to support and encourage her along the way. If she decides kids are not in her forte', I might cry every night about it but in the end it's her decision. It will be her job to raise her own kids, her Dad and I will be there to spoil them rotten . Besides, her Dad and I will be travelling with either a boat cruise or an RV cruiser :) .

Everytime someone says she's beautiful, I find myself whispering in her ears, "and you're intelligent, strong and you'll be the President someday". The latter doesn't sound all too appealing to my husband though. He thinks she will be criticized for the way she would run the country. I recognize his concerns so now I'm thinking of a new career I could whisper in her ear the next time someone goes crazy about her looks. Any ideas?

She's only 8 months old so we have a long way to go. She's got us wrapped around her little fingers right now but I know we'll try our best with the help of her brother as she grows up to be her own individual feisty self. I see signs of it already so I think we're on the right path. I hope so anyway.

How about you?, What are your concerns about rasing your own daughter? Please fell free to opine with your tips and suggestions.
