This weekend I learned that my neighbours, who have an 11-month old, are selling their house and escaping the country. The parents have travelled somewhat and wanted to continue travelling, so they accepted a contract to teach English in Japan a la family. It's an interesting position that will also require some liaison responsibilities with higher ups, plus there's always the opportunity to tutor English on the side. The contract could go on as long as 3 years.
After hearing about their new adventure, I was transported back to the first day my daughter started school. Five years of freedom came to a halt the day she walked into grade one. Prior to my daughter officially starting school, we lived each day as it came. My husband's days off were during the week. He took holidays in low season - fall and winter. If our family felt like zooming out to the mountains for a few days, we did. If the urge hit us to go camping mid-week, we did. We had to only answer to ourselves. There wasn't a looming institution deciding when we would have days off together, or when we could take holidays. We were wandering obliviously through the most unscheduled time of our lives. And like most wonderful experiences, we didn't know what we had until it was gone!
So, if you have little ones that haven't started school yet, consider travelling now. I'm not saying you can't pull your kids out of school later on, but it really is easier when that's not an issue.
So, pack your bags, escape to Japan, or just go take a roadtrip mid-week, you have the freedom, enjoy it...
Figuring it out as I go,
- Lesli
