National Child Day, November 20/08

nationalchildday.jpg

Did you know that November 20/08 is National Child Day? This year's theme is The Right to Protection from Sexual Exploitation. It's reflected in Article 34 of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography.

"The Government of Canada is committed to protecting children from harm in Canada and abroad, and will continue to support approaches that promote effective prevention and intervention, recognizing the underlying factors that can contribute to situations of abuse, violence, exploitation and neglect," says the Public Health Agency of Canada.

On its website, the Public Health Agency of Canada offers excellent National Child Day information including activities for kids, parents/caregivers and educators.

For Parents/Caregivers, the agency suggests On National Child Day:
* "Have a family discussion on children's rights."
* "Encourage children to take part in activities under Children Fun Zone (link to Children and Youth Zone page of NCD site), make colouring books, play with word puzzles, etc …"
* "Stay aware of your children’s use of technology, including the use of a webcam, instant messaging, social networking sites, photo exchanges, and cell phones."

For more information, visit the agency website here.
