For years I've read the many benefits kids gain when they learn how to play an instrument, therefore my husband and I have always planned on delving into it once our son is ready. He turned 9 last month and months before it, we asked him what he wanted for his birthday. Along with the usual legos and Nascar stuff he also said he'd love a guitar. My husband was just as eager to get him one because he himself can play the guitar. He thought himself when he was a teenager.
Before we really decided to buy our son his own guitar, we explained to him that he'll have to work hard on learning and not to get frustrated too easily. I also adviced my husband on the latter :) . As much as it's fun for us parents to watch our kids strum along and play a song, we need to be realistic. Our kids's heart really have to be in learning to play and all we could do is encourage them. Don't get frustrated and don't try to push it too hard. Let them do it at their own pace. You want them to enjoy it along the way.

So this summer, besides going to New York for a reunion vacation, it looks like teaching my son how to play guitar is also on the agenda. This should be fun. Do you think he'll be able to rock on with his favorite song "Smoke in the Water" before Christmas? :)
