My family is just recovering from a bout of colds that required antibiotics to clear up (though truthfully I am not feeling any better). An alarming trend with my older son is how excited he is when he knows that he is going to have to take medicine - he loves the banana and fruit punch flavours that they come in. And for a five year old- forget child-proof caps - they are anything but. He can open them no problem, prompting me to put them under lock and key.
TIP - for medicine that has to remain refrigerated, use a small make-up case with a zipper that you can put a small luggage lock through - it is worth the extra precaution.
I understand the need and importance to make medicine palatable to young children - it is important the course of treatment is finished. Good luck getting anything bitter into a 1 year old or 5 year old more than once. But because of the added flavour in prescription and over the counter medications, parents have to be vigilant in keeping their children safe. My son has been known to prowl our cupboards looking for a treat that could possibly be stashed away. I wouldn't put it past him to try and sample some of the "yummy medicine" if it were available.
What is your take on sugary and flavoured medicine for children? And do they really need viatmins in the form of gummy bears or crunchy candy?
