Kids and Television

A lot of celebrity moms claim that their kids don't watch TV. I've always found it ironic since they're always on TV and that's how they make their living - being seen - yet their kids don't even go near a television. But, we all know celebrites live in their own world, right? No matter how much they want regular folks to understand that they're just human like everyone else, Hah.

It's easy for them to say and implement the No TV rule since they have nannies, maids, chefs, fitness instructors and money to be able to afford going to Disney World or trip around the world whenever they feel like it, at their own disposal. Regular folks like me turns to television for help to be able to do one simple chore. Not to mention being able to have a 5 minute shower.

I do agree that watching TV shows these days can be very tricky. As a parent you really have to pick the best shows appropriate for your kids. Like everything in life, choosing what your kids can watch depends on using your common sense.

My son loves to watch the Cartoon Network channel and whenever America's Funnies videos is on. Our rule used to be, "Only in the Weekends". Now, we've lightened up a bit. We let him watch 1 hour of cartoon after he finishes his homework during school week. After that hour, he goes outside to play with his friends or stay in his room to do something productive like play with his legos, read books or draw. Sunday is the day AFV is on but he can only watch it after he takes a shower. It's over by 8pm which is perfect for his bedtime schedule.

We try to stick to this rule. It's very flexible in my opinion. Too much TV is bad, for kids and even adults(except me..hahaha). I think having a time limit for watching TV works. It does for my household anyway.

What's your rule when it comes to your kids watching TV?

The way I fixed this with my son was to cancel cable!! He gets to watch one of his videos each day.
I was relying on the TV too much to entertain him and it came to the point where all he wanted to do was watch TV.
I will introduce it back at some point because media literacy is an important lesson to learn - but now that he is out of the withdrawal period I am loathe to do it anytime soon.
