Of course we all know that one of the ingredients of a healthy productive life is to squeeze some exercise into your day. And of course we all know that exercise is pretty much the first thing to go when our lives get busy with kids, work and cleaning (I swear - does the clutter ever clear?). Of course, when your kids are little you can rely on them to keep you busy chasing them, lifting them and taking them to the park. But, once they hit a certain age, we stop doing alot of those things.(I'd likely break my back lifting my 10 year old!)
So what do you do? I joined a gym - one of those all female ones. This way I don't feel I need to shave my legs or fix my hair. When I go it's au natural. Sometimes our expectations of how much we should be exercising far exceeds what is necessary for good physical and mental health. At first I thought I should go to the gym 4-5 times a week. When I discovered that I couldn't fit it in 4-5 times a week I just stopped going.
Recently (well, last fall) I started working out again at the gym. I decided that if I could get to the gym two times a week then I would be satisfied. This worked for me. I can quite easily fit in a visit twice a week. I do some strength training and some aerobic training. Outside of that I really try to go for walks with my family.
Sometimes you have to realize that if you don't lower your expectations and compromise a little, then you just might end up missing out entirely.
Figuring it out as I go,
Lesli
