Not decades ago, today. It was the parent information session at the school my son will be attending in the fall. Call me sappy, but I felt very emotional sitting there listening to all the things my son will be doing (without ME).
He has attended preschool, but this feels different - the start of his official school career is looming.
Here are the tips the teachers gave us parents to get our kids ready for the fall:
• Read with your child every day
• Talk about what you have read; favorite picture, predicting what will happen on the next page
• Read street signs, store fronts, billboards, etc.
• Go to the Public Library
• Count things: cars, trees, houses, money. Fingers and toes.
• Colour and draw with crayons or coloured pencils, display their work proudly on the refrigerator
• Teach your child to look after their own belongings. Put away things, etc.
• Tell your children you really like their help
• Encourage your child to speak in sentences
• Set clear boundaries with your child especially for personal safety issues and behaviour towards other people
• Sing songs, say the Alphabet and recite Nursery Rhymes, etc.
Okay, after reading through the list I know he is going to be fine. But what about me?!
