How to Start Over

Starting over. In some way, we've all experienced starting over, right? Maybe it was starting over after losing a job, a failed relationship or even a serious health crisis. I know I secretly call myself a "comeback kid". Reinventing ourselves can be incredibly exhilarating and scary. I'm always inspired by people who dare to turn the pages in their lives.

Speaking of turning pages, I'm intrigued by Cathy Alter and her new book Up For Renewal: What Magazines Taught Me About Love, Sex, And Starting Over. At 37, Alter was at a fork-in-the-road in her life. After a failed marriage, she was "continuing down the path of poor decisions, one paved with a steady stream of junk food, unpaid bills, questionable friends, and highly inappropriate men."

So she took refuge in magazines the next year and decided to follow their advice. By the end of the year, she thought she would "get rid of upper-arm jiggle, crawl out of debt, host the perfect dinner party, run a mile without puking, engage in better bathtub booty, ask for a raise, and rehaul her apartment."
