How to Organize Your Home Office

So many Canadian women I know are self-employed writers, consultants and entrepreneurs. They're brilliant, talented women and yet their home offices don't reflect that. They can't seem to get and stay organized there.

That's why many would benefit from meeting Vancouver's Mary Ann Westendorf, owner of The Bizzy Butler Concierge Services, which offers professional organizer services.

One of the most common problems, Westendorf encounters with her clients is lack of storage for their supplies and files. She recommends the following Storage Solutions:

1. "Ensure you have a large enough desk and sufficient filing cabinets to contain your personal and business files."
2. "Buy lots of file folders with coloured tabs so you can colour code your paperwork into categories."
3. "Buy a selection of small containers or boxes to hold pens, staples tape and other necessary supplies in your desk drawers. Dollar stores often carry a wide range of plastic boxes and containers ideal for the home office."
4. "Purchase 4 desk top upright holders or tray-style baskets."
5. "Purchase a good quality paper shredder."
6. "Purchase a large waste paper basket."
7. "A good sized cupboard, armoire, dresser or shelving to house your computer paper, binders, books etc.
8. "Invest in a comfortable office chair and good task lighting."
