It's that time of year...registration for sports, music lessons, dance lessons and even academic tutoring beckons parents. Being parents we want to give our kids every opportunity, but at what cost?
It all looks so good on paper, each activity neatly scheduled on the calendar on the fridge. But, we're doing ourselves a favour by truly considering what is realistic in terms of extracurricular activities.
A few years ago, when my family's calendar became so crammed with activities and commitments, I really had to take a look at the value of the activities we were getting involved in. Was the value of the activity and enjoyment of the event worth taking away from our family home time, which I began to realized, was of huge importance.
Showing your kids that family time together is a value that is important in your family is now. And us parents can start by not overbooking our kids (or ourselves!!!), but instead choosing to have nights and weekends at home hanging out or going for walks together.
I won't suggest playing games because it sounds so corny, but honestly, kids love playing games with their parents. Interestingly enough, I know I've read more than one study that asks junior high school kids what the one thing they wished they had more of and do you know what they said?
...More time with their parents...
Figuring it out as I go,

I completely agree! They're only kids once and they'll remember time spent with family better than going to games/practices.
