Next week is Fire Prevention Week in British Columbia. The safety campaign has made me think about smoke alarms and creating a fire escape plan for our home. This year's campaign will raise awareness about home fires and preventing them.
Did you know the four leading causes of home fires are cooking, heating, electrical and smoking? In a recent news release, The City of Victoria,BC says "the most important things to know to prevent fires in the home" are:
"Cooking: Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling or broiling food. If you leave the kitchen, even for a short period of time, turn off the stove."
"Heating: Keep anything that can burn, such as paper, bedding or furniture, at least three feet away from heat sources."
"Electrical: "Replace cracked and damaged electrical cords and only use extension cords for temporary wiring. Consider having additional circuits or receptacles added by a qualified electrician."
"Smoking: Avoid smoking indoors. When smoking outdoors, never use a planter for an ashtray. Use deep sturdy ashtrays or a large tin can filled with sand."
