In my fantasy world, I'm a domestic goddess. I'm probably one of the few twenty-somethings who honestly aspire to be Donna Reed. I'm fascinated by the dinner party, that stunning soirée that seems so effortlessly put together (and that cleverly covers up any earlier adventures with smoke detectors, awkward tablescape attempts and frantic phone calls to the takeout location of your choice).
My favorite book on the topic thus far has been Christopher Lowell's The Hassle-Free Host. Because that's what I aspire to be. And I love how he gives us permission to keep it simple, cheat where we can, and enjoy our experiences with fabulous food and friends. His ideas only LOOK super-fancy. The recipes are simple, the table decorations beautiful. And the pizza party? So ridiculously appealing, I just might have to pause and grab a slice before I finish typing this.
New on my entertaining radar is Matthew Mead's Entertaining Simple. The cover photography alone makes me swoon. It won't be out until October, so I have plenty of time to perfect my hassle-free entertaining à la Lowell in the meantime.
I'll be Donna Reed yet. Just you wait.
