Fundraising For Our Kids

I just pulled an all nighter working a casino for my daughters' dance organization. I was assigned the role of Banker. (Thank goodness I play Monopoly regularly!) If you haven't had to put in hours as part of your volunteer commitment to the activity that your child is involved in, it's only a matter of time. I felt it was a great way to knock off the volunteer hours that are required of me all in one shot. The only downfall was that my shift started at 6pm and ended at 3am. But, now I have contributed my share towards the running of this club.

The interesting thing is that I also learned alot about the running of the cash cage at a casino. Now, normally this would be information that would be of no use to someone, but being a writer, I found it very interesting. I now know the different chip denominations, the proper way to count the chips and the money back to the customer, and I know what $100,000 in twenties looks like. I touched alot of money. (Which is gross, I know. I washed my hands several times...) Apparently, cocaine is commonly found on casino money. Okay, I digress...

My point is, is that at some point we will all have to get involved in our children's activites one way or another. Whether it's something you want to do, something you believe in or not, or something that is beyond your comfort zone, you will feel good about having helped your kids' club. Because doing your volunteer part helps the club to run smoothly, efficiently and ultimately benefits your kids.

...and if you're looking for interesting material for a novel, you just might find the characters and behind the scene details around midnight while you're working a casino shift...

Figuring it out as I go,

Lesli
