Fly Baby Bird, Fly!

My mom and dad have some birds nesting their backyard. The neat thing is that the nest is in full view as you sit on their patio.

When the kids and I were there the other day, the mother bird seemed to be feeding the two baby birds. She'd swoop into the nest with some food in her mouth, attempt to feed the babies and then just as one of the babies was about to grab the food from her, the mother bird would back away out of the nest and fly to a nearby tree.

She repeated this sequence a few times. We weren't sure what she was doing, but we were intrigued enough to continue watching.

About the fourth time she swooped in and began teasing her baby birds with the food, one of the baby birds lunged at the food in the mother's mouth - and began falling right out of the nest!

We all gasped and just when it seemed the baby bird had met it's fate, it began to flap it's wings! The baby bird continued to flap it's wings in an awkward way and sort of flew, sort of coasted, and finally came to a complete stop on the ground where it then made it's way into the lower branches of a tree.

The mother bird had watched her baby bird learning to fly from her perch on the garage roof. When the baby bird completed it's first solo flight, the mom flew down under the tree to check on her baby's safety and to no doubt congratulate her on a job well done.

My kids were in awe, of course, and I, well, I sure was impressed by the mother bird's technique in getting her baby out of the nest. She knew it had to learn to fly and the only way to learn was to be put in a do or die situation. Wow, that mother bird had grit! A role model for mother's everywhere!
