We're spending so much time outdoors, I'm concerned about West Nile virus. Recently, I've even heard of a West Nile virus researcher getting the virus. So I'm researching West Nile and I found the excellent FIGHT the BITE website, from Alberta Health and Wellness.
What are the facts? West Nile virus (WNv) is a mosquito-borne virus that can cause West Nile Non-Neurological syndrome or occassionally more serious West Nile Neurological Syndrome.
West Nile is transmitted to humans primarily through the bite of an infected mosquito. One in five who become infected can be ill. While severe illness is rare, the risk rises with age.
FIGHT the BITE has excellent tips available on protecting yourself for house and garden, children, insect repellents, seniors, outdoor enthusiasts, outdoor workers and animal health.
Here are a few simple tips on reducing your risk of infection:
-"Your best protection is insect repellent with DEET. Used as directed, DEET has an excellent safety record."
-"Products with lemon eucalyptus oil are effective for shorter periods of time."
-"Wear long-sleeved shirts and pants at dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active."
For more tips, check out the FIGHT the BITE website.
