Even Superwomen Say No

supergirl.jpg

There's a strange pressure that we put on ourselves to do it all. We believe that we can have everything, do everything and be everything to everyone. After a couple of weeks of severely limited sleep, I'm come to understand the truth behind both the importance of rest and the need to say no. When we stretch ourselves too thin, none of the things we're trying to accomplish get our full attention. When we're tired, we're not properly investing in others' lives. And most importantly, when we neglect ourselves, we end up crashing and burning, needing far greater recovery time than the few hours of productivity lost by just turning off the computer and going to bed.

With technology-on-the-go, the allure of being a multitasking maven, and the whispers of "you must be successful" following us around, I think it's time we take a step back and breathe. A real superwoman is rested. She loves. She tucks her kids in at night. She knows what day of the week it is. She invests in her health. She prioritizes.

Balance is a tricky thing. And I'm starting to believe that those women who say they have it all figured out are lying. Or have personal assistants. We need to give ourselves permission to fumble around, dropping the things that don't matter, opting for a nap rather than vacuuming, and just live a little. A juggling act is only amusing for a short while. And no one, on her deathbed, regrets not cramming just one more thing into her weekday.

Enjoy your weekend, Superwomen. Take time to rest, pray, love and breathe.
