Dinner and Life Lessons

brother_sister1.jpgDuring tonight's dinner the word "jealousy" was introduced at the dining table. I sliced a bread, one piece slightly bigger than the other one. I gave my son his piece and while spreading a little bit of butter on the other piece for my daughter, she started crying. Nonchalantly I told her not to get jealous. My son commented that maybe she's jealous because she got the smaller piece. Of course that wasn't the case at all. She was whining coz she wanted to eat. But I took that opportunity to teach my son about not feeling jealousy towards somebody he loves. Especially his sister. I encouraged him to be supportive. If she is doing great, he should tell her "good job" and that he's proud of her. His sister in return will give him the same support, respect and encouragement in anything he does in life. He made a point that his 10 month old sister can't do those things yet so I explaned to him the importance of his actions. He will be a great role model to his sister. His actions will be emulated therefore he must understand early on what his Dad and I are teaching him. In between mouthfuls of boneless chicken breast in a bed of spaghetti, he nodded and said "Yes Mom".

I can only hope for the best. In the meantime, I'll take every opportunity I have in teaching all the necessary things that will help him and his sister, eventually, live a decent life and be the best person they could possibly be. Isn't that what all parents want for their children?

Well besides grandchildren of course :)
