I've often joked that if nutritionists ever discover that salad is deadly, I'll be one of the first casualties to prove their findings. And then I read this:
Celebrity chef Anthony Worrall Thompson has apologized after accidentally recommending in a magazine article that the weed henbane (also known as stinking nightshade), a potentially deadly plant, made an excellent addition to summertime meals.
Apparently the chef confused the poisonous plant for one of a similar name. Poor guy. Apparently henbane, the poisonous plant, is thought to have been the main ingredient in the poison Romeo drank. And we all know how that worked out. Even the Shakespeare lover in me has no desire to give that one a go.
Fortunately, no casualties have been reported. And Worrall, quite embarrassed by the incident, has been apologizing profusely.
For those interested, he meant fat hen, an edible weed rich in vitamin C. Not quite the same thing.
