Uh, sorry, I didn't take a picture of it. You'll just have to imagine a flat, black squirrel...
The squirrel must have met it's fate crossing the road in front of my girls' school because there it lay in the grass, as the three of us were walking to school.
I saw it before the girls' did and like the time I saw the dead deer at the side of the highway, I tried to use distraction to avert their innocent eyes away from such graphic exposure.
"Look at that house over there", I said with urgency, "Was it always blue, or did they paint it last night?" (Okay, not the most riveting topic, but I was thinking on my feet!) I pointed at the house, but the girls were already focused on the squirrel.
"Forget the house, mom. Look at this squished squirrel!" Yelled my oldest. Stopping to examine it's flatness.
"Oh weird, " Said my youngest, leaning in for a closer look.
"Looks like that squirrel didn't make it, eh, mom?" Commented by oldest.
"Look at it's legs." Said my youngest getting even closer.
"Hey, you know what you guys? Let's not get too close to that poor flat squirrel. Let's just let him rest in peace." I said moving along.
"Okay, mom. Are you okay with this? I mean, you do know that his soul has already left his body, right?" My oldest says patting my arm.
And with that we carried on to the school.
...Geez, when did my kids get so practical?
Figuring it out as I go,
- Lesli

I saw one of these too today, while out for a walk with my squirrel-chasing dog. When we happened upon it, Artie (the dog) stopped, stared at it, and looked up at me as if to say "this one's too easy; let's move on." So we did.
Lesli says: Dead squirrels are no fun, eh Artie?
