Book Review: I Was a Really Good Mom Before I Had Kids

I love the title of this book.

I Was a Really Good Mom Before I Had Kids was written by two moms (Ashworth & Nobile) who realized that alot of moms are looking at other moms and thinking, ' I don't know how she does it!'. Basically thinking that other moms have it more together then they do. The truth is, we're all 'challenged' with motherhood at times.

The authors interviewed many moms and came up with some very revealing and interesting revelations. Some of the quotes from the moms that were interviewed are hilarious. Like one mom said, "I would give up my husband for a housekeeper." Another mom revealed, "I love being a mom, I just hate doing it."

This book is an enjoyable read because it talks truthfully about how moms these days are feeling. Alot are feeling overwhlemed with the expectations that they feel are placed on them. Personally, I think we do this to ourselves. Moms naturally take on too much and then feel they are spread too thin. It would be a better idea to lessen our loads and really enjoy what we are doing with our kids and in our lives.

There was a point that came up several times about how we, as moms, judge each other. Moms can be so nasty to each other!

There's a chapter on husbands and how their point of view is often not our point of view.

And we're always wondering if we're making the right decisions - organic or not? Football or badminton? French lessons or Spanish? According to this book we second guess everything we do. We're a mess!

Actually, I really enjoyed reading this book and laughed out loud a few times. It does touch close to home a few times. The last part of the book offers solutions and common sense ways of dealing with all of our mom dilemmas.

Gone are the days when our moms were raising us. Back then our moms may not have had the modern conveniences that we have, but there were less distractions, choices and expectations. There were also less scientific studies and professional opinions about parenting.

What do you think is the biggest challenge for you as a mom?

Figuring it out as I go,

- Lesli
