Bitter Roots Tender Shoots

I'm inspired by brave, original Canadian women. Sally Armstrong is one such woman. An Order of Canada member, she is a documentary filmmaker, teacher, author, human rights activist and contributing editor at Macleans.

Back in 2002, she published the bestselling book Veiled Threat: The Hidden Power of the Women of Afghanistan. This year, she revisits Afghanistan with her new book Bitter Roots Tender Shoots: The Uncertain Fate of Afghanistan's Women. She compares women's lives pre- and post- Taliban. Researching the book, Armstrong interviewed Afghan and Western women who are committed to improving health, education, culture, religion and human rights.
