Deputy Chief Coroner Dr. Jim Cairns of Ontario Canada called for a Canada-Wide ban on these bath seats with bath rings last Tuesday. 50 deaths caused by bathtime drowning have been reported since 1984-2004. 5 of them are related to the bath seats in question.
Infant bath seats and bath rings are used to hold babies in a sitting position in the bathtub. Most of the products have suction cups which hold the seat or ring in place on the bottom of the tub.A Health Canada consumer product safety website states that babies using bath seats or rings have drowned when the suction cups came loose, causing the seat to tip over.
In other instances, a baby slipped out through the leg opening of the seat or the baby tried to climb out of the seat.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to make matters worse for the families who lost their babies, but my question is - where were the parents? Isn't that one of the cardinal rules of bath-time? NEVER leaved your child alone in the tub... How awful for these families, but I'm learning quickly myself as a new mom that we have to be very careful and very aware of what WE do as the caregivers for our kids.

The product is not to blame - the parents leaving a baby alone in the bathtub are to blame!
