Are Food Additives Making Our Kids Hyper?

Well, who knows for sure.

Although there have been plenty of studies showing that certain food colourings and additives can contribute to hyperactivity in young kids, nothing has been completely conclusive.

These studies basically say that kids with Attention Disorders may have worsened symptoms after consuming fruit juice, candy, etc. that are spiked with food colourings and preservatives.

The studies also indicate that kids without existing Attention Disorders show a change in behaviour also.

It's worth taking a look at the ingredients in some of the snacks and juices that our kids eat and drink. When you start seeing ingredients like yellow no. 2 and red no. 1, a red flag should go up. Hello, that's not food and if it's not food it likely shouldn't be going in anyone's mouth.

The preservative sodium benzoate is added to many foods and drinks, and again, it's not of this earth. (Rule of Thumb: If you can't trace back where a food item came from, ie. cow, garden, ocean - Don't eat it!) I have a friend that cannot eat anything that has sodium benzoate in it or she gets severe allergy symptoms.

Whether our kids really react to some of the junk in the food these days is really up to us as parents to decide. We know our kids best. But, it's probably worth taking more than a glance at the ingredients in the products we're giving our kids...

Figuring it out as I go,

- Lesli
