A Hot Topic - Immunization

marykbaird_P1020418.jpgChatelaine, Today's Parent, Oprah - have all recently tackled the immunization or autism topic. All have approached it from the point of view that vaccinations do not cause autism, but there are still growing numbers of parents who are opting out of immunizing their children.

From the Chatelaine article Sticking Point by Katrina Onstad,

"...sound medical research says vaccinations are imperative and low-risk. There is no proven link between autism and the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine, or a link between autism and thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative."

Onstad continues speculating that it is more likely that doctors are getting better at detecting autism in children earlier. And thimerosal is no longer used for the MMR vaccine.

From the Today's Parent article Vaccine Update by Wendy Haaf,

"...the immunization/autism rumour is like one of those movie zombies that won't die no matter how many shattering blows it takes."

From the Oprah.com website,

"While some parents claim that one of the possible triggers [of autism] may be linked to childhood vaccinations, the CDC says they found no evidence to support that vaccines cause autism."

My take? Get your children immunized, the vaccinations were created for a reason. The current generation of parents (myself included) have no idea how good we have it. Diseases such as polio and Haemophilus influenza type B are not part of our everyday world and we should be grateful for the work that was done. I am going to do my best to keep it that way for my children.

What is your opinion on immunizations for children?

Get them. Our children needs to be immunized. Interestingly enough, I think I was a part of finding the chicken pox shot. Unfortunately, I caught it during my honeymoon. I donated my blood while I had it in my local clinic in California for their chicken pox research. So I'm proud of that :).
