A Texas legislator has proposed that pregnant women considering abortion be offered $500 not to end their pregnancies.Republican State Sen. Dan Patrick, who also is a conservative radio talk show host, said Friday the money might persuade the women to go ahead and have babies, then give them up for adoption.
He said during a legislative conference in New Braunfels, 45 miles south of Austin, there were 75,000 abortions in Texas last year.
"If this incentive would give pause and change the mind of 5 percent of those women, that's 3,000 lives. That's almost as many people as we've lost in Iraq," Patrick said.
Patrick has filed legislation to make the payment state law, but the legislature has not voted on it.
His proposal calls for giving any woman going to an abortion clinic the $500 option, to be paid no more than 30 days after the baby is born and given up for adoption.
What happened to Pro-Choice?. Because I am a mother, people are surprised when I say I am the latter. When I say I am, I'm referring to the fact that a woman should be able to choose what she thinks is best for her. Either it's to have the child or to have an abortion. Let me make this clear now, I will never retort to abortion, UNLESS, medically speaking says I should. There are other reasons too, like rape or incest. But that's a situation I care not to delved into right now, or may never will.
So I'm not sure about this new proposal. Clearly there are other things to be discussed but for now, what do you think?. Should they vote or veto? I'm guessing it will never be passed but we're talking about Texas here so you never know..hardy har har ;).

Hi Sylvia, thanks for stopping by. I know, $500, then what? It sounds like a quick fix to me. Although one could argue abortion is a quick fix as well. I don't know, I'm still on the fence. Foster Care program is not getting all the attention needed too so that should be considered also when making this into a law. A lot of factors.
Well, I'm not 100% pro-life, nor am I 100% pro-choice, but I can tell you this - paying a woman $500 to not have an abortion is the most ridiculous idea I've heard in a long time.
Where is this $500 going to come from? Tax-payers pockets? So, not only do tax-payers have to pay for everything under the sun, including the welfare care of some babies/children without parents/working parents/etc., but now they're going to have to pay the mother to bring them into this mess, too? (Don't get me wrong, I'm all for helping people out when they genuinely need it and aren't just milking the government. And I know life is precious and important, but I also know that our government has made it possible for us to CHOOSE, and now they're trying to manipulate that right.)
So, given the fact that the government gave us the right to choose, I can think of a million other ways to spend the $500 (multiplied by the number of women who have abortions in Texas per year).
The first idea that comes to mind? Providing health care to the homeless diabetic man who had severe gangrene in half his leg and NO SHOES for his, literally, rotten foot my best friend met in the ER last week. Why is nothing being done about THAT?
I love this blog, ladies, keep up the good work!
"but I also know that our government has made it possible for us to CHOOSE, and now they're trying to manipulate that right.)"
EXACTLY!! Sounds a little bit like The Patriot Act...but that's another story.
Getting $500 to not have an abortion just screams "a scam waiting to happen" IMO, i'm afraid.
It does sound a lot like a scam, doesn't it? I know how pro-lifers feel about abortion, and I respect that - and I know the very idea of the medical process makes many people queasy - but, offering $500 to not abort your baby? That just feels wrong on so many levels, too. It's degrading, cheapening, and a pay-off.

This is a very interesting case. I am so glad you brought this to my attention.
I can hardly stand to watch the news because it is always negative, but I think this might be something positive.
I think I am for it. The woman still gets to choose, but the gov. is finally offering some help (though, $500 is not so much in the long run).
But as your article mentioned, this might encourage women to chose adoption.
thanks,
Sylvia C.
