Did you know each ingredient in your next meal has likely travelled at least 1,500 miles? That startling statistic prompted Vancouverites Alisa Smith and James MacKinnon to make a change. For one year, they decided they would buy or gather their food and drink from within 100 miles of their Vancouver apartment. Inspiring Canadian story? Eventually, the couple sparked a movement - the 100 Mile Diet.
Their "100 Mile Diet Getting Started Guide" suggests:
1. Start small.
2. There are no rules.
3. Surf the Internet.
4. Find your farmers' market.
5. Find your farmers.
6. Start a garden - even a tiny one.
7. Plan a winter garden.
8. Buy in bulk and preserve.
9. Join the movement.
